Lauren Schultz

School Counselor, Menasha High School

1. What did you study in college?  Was your plan to enter the school counseling world?

I went to Carroll University where I studied Psychology and Sociology.  I had an amazing professor who was very much like my own counselor and mentor.  This sparked my interest in counseling.  I then attended UW-Oshkosh for Professional Counseling but it wasn't until I started the program that I realized School Counseling was the right fit for me.

2. What inspires you most about your job?

The students! The students' stories of grit and resilience continue to amaze me everyday.  I'm honored to be a part of their journey.  They inspire me to keep growing and learning so I can be at my best for them.

3. What is the best part of what you do?

Again, the students!  They bring so much light and laughter to my life.  I love being able to work with the students in so many capacities.  In addition to my school counselor role, I also advise our GSA club and help out during sporting events.  It's fun getting to know the students in a variety of settings.

4. How has being a member of WACAC helped you?

Being involved in WACAC has helped me tremendously.  I'm so glad I discovered this organization during my first year as a high school counselor.  The resources and information I've gained from WACAC has helped transform our program.  The connections I've made is by far the most beneficial part of WACAC.  The networking between admissions and high school counselors is amazing.

6. What is one piece of advice you would give a new admissions counselor or high school counselor?

Never underestimate the importance of self care.  Our jobs can be stressful and burnout can quickly follow.  Make yourself a priority and take the time for self care.  You can't pour from an empty cup!

7. What's an interesting fact about you that has nothing to do with admissions counseling?

I love to bake.  I enjoy spoiling friends and family with tasty treats.  I dream of being on Food Network someday!
